I am an oceanographer from Belgium with fundamental and applied expertise in remote and in situ optical sensing of marine particles – the living and the non-living, the organic and the inorganic, from submicron to centimeter-size. My research is situated at the interface of marine optics, biogeochemistry, and ecology.
I hold master degrees in Applied Mathematics (1997-2002) and Marine ecology (2002-2004) from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium and obtained a Ph.D. in Physics from the Université du Littoral - Côte d’Opale in France (2012). I was a postdoctoral fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, USA (2012-2014), held a Banting postdoctoral fellowship at Laval University in Québec, Canada (2014-2017), a Marie Sklodowska Curie fellowship at the Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche-sur-Mer of Sorbonne Université, France (2017-2019), and currently hold a Starting Grant from the European Research Council at Ghent University in Belgium with kick-off on 1 May 2021. Since May 2020 I am an Associate Research Professor and head of the Marine Optics and Remote Sensing Group (MarSens) within the Biology Department of Ghent University.
